Packing Made Easy with Our Lay Flat Collection

Posted by Adele Poudrier on

If you haven’t noticed, travel is kind of our thing. We’ve been stepping up the travel game since ’82 with colorful, quilted travel bags. Over time, our travel collection has evolved to include everything from small cosmetic bags to hardside rolling luggage. Our designers pride themselves on innovation and continually listen to customer feedback and watch industry trends to determine new updates and styles to add to the collection. Our latest travel innovation is the Lay Flat Collection featuring two new travel bags — the Iconic Lay Flat Travel Duffel Bag and the Iconic Lay Flat Weekender.

Our newest travel collection was designed to simplify packing. Both bags unzip on three sides in order to lay completely flat, so you can pack on both sides — much like you would with our dual-compartment Hardside Spinner. Each side has a mesh overlay to keep your items more organized and secure than ever.

We wanted to learn more about how the Lay Flat Collection came to life, so we chatted with Renee, one of our product designers.

Why did you decide to design the Lay Flat Collection?

“I love our duffel and weekender so much, but as an over-packer I always need the item on the bottom. I wanted to have a way that I could easily see my clothes but not ruin the fold job I did on all my other clothes. I wanted to [create a bag] that has the ease of packing with a rolling luggage piece in a soft bag style.”

Are these styles similar to our original Large Duffel and Weekender bags?

“Yes, both are based on the Iconic versions. They are the same size and have most of the same exterior features.”

Other than the ability to pack on both sides, what is your favorite feature?

“I love the mesh pocket on the inside — it reminds me of our hardside rolling luggage. I can fit all my socks, belts and other small items inside to easily access and stay organized.”

Describe the Lay Flat Collection in just three words.

“Relaxed, organized, game-changer.”

Lastly, what kind of trip are these bags perfect for?

“They are perfect for car trips — especially overnight or short weekend trips! I can keep my stuff on one side and pack my husband’s belongings on the other.”

the weekender

Much like the weekender you know and love, the Lay Flat Weekender is carry-on compliant, fitting in both the overhead compartment or under airplane seats. Making your way through the airport will be a total breeze with the trolley sleeve to slip over your rolling luggage handle and an adjustable (and removable) strap to carry it closer when needed. The interior features three zip pockets for maximum organization, plus there are exterior zip and slip pockets to keep essentials handy.

the duffel

If you have loved your OG duffel since the early days, we have a feeling you’ll love the updates on our new Lay Flat Duffel Bag. With similar functionality to the Lay Flat Weekender, this version also unzips on three sides for flat packing. It has the same adjustable strap and interior pockets, but it features an additional exterior slip pocket and the trolley sleeve can zip up into an additional pocket. A little larger in size, the Lay Flat Duffel is still carry-on compliant, but we recommend only placing it in the overhead bin (it’ll be a little too large to fit under the seat!).
