Behind the Design: The Storied Lines of Java Navy Camo

Posted by Ava Kuhn on

This is the very best time of the year to embrace both beloved traditions and crisp beginnings — which is why we wanted to design a pattern that features fall fashion trends plus favorite flourishes that stem right from our archives. Discover the timeless tale of Java Navy Camo, our latest arrival that updates fan-favorite Java Blue!

Amanda, one of our print designers, has all of the details on Java Navy Camo's special debut. Find out our sources of inspiration and the ways to wear and pair this print for the season!

Java Blue was originally introduced in the spring of 2006!

We've had relaunches and reinterpretations along the way — like Java Lace, our exclusive-to-Custom print with a dreamy palette perfect for bridal parties, and Java Camo, an edition made uniquely for the Vera Bradley + Sword & Plough collaboration.

Did you know that Java Blue was originally going to be pink? Yes, pink, not the grounded palette we all know now! Our co-founder Barbara Bradley Baekgaard suggested a pivot to turqoise — a color that was totally trending — at the last minute.

For Java Navy Camo, we redesigned the ground, vines and blooms in noble fir green, navy, brownie bite and admiral blue for a forward-focused range of hues that are all the more effortless. A take on Jacobean prints found in classic upholstery fabrics, the timeless flourishes found in Java Navy Camo draw on interior design to create all of the cool-meets-casual, wear-and-pair vibes.

"It is so incredibly versatile. I think it styles well with an olive green army jacket, a tee shirt and your favorite jeans for a casual look. On the other side, it looks great with slim navy pants, a clean white button-down shirt and our brown tortoise eyewear for classic wear-to-work vibes. It looks fantastic in our eyewear! It also looks so timeless on our bedding and our new kitchen items."

"Java Navy Camo pairs well with so many shades for every fall event. For me, a trip to the orchard and upstate for the foliage are musts. I love campfires, hiking and spending as much time in nature as possible. Our dog, Bauer, is new to the U.S. so we are excited for him to see all the leaves ... and eventually snow!"
